The American Board of Psychoanalysis provides the following education and training criteria to be eligible for certification without examination by four different pathways:
3. Analysts certified in psychoanalysis by ABPP or BCD-P by December 31, 2020 who are graduates of psychoanalytic institutes not approved by APsaA, IPA or
ACPEInc, but who can document education and training that are equivalent to AAPE, ACPEInc, or IPA training standards, which include but are not limited
to both training analysis and control analyses conducted on an individual basis at a frequency of three to five times a week.
4. Analysts who, prior to December 31, 2020:
(A) had no prior opportunity for certification because: either (i) their respective discipline, for example, Family Therapy, Pastoral Counseling, or Graduate Degrees in the Humanities or (ii)) the organizational affiliation of their training institute, for example, physicians trained at non-APsaA Institutes; and
(B) can demonstrate that they have undergone a post graduate clinical vetting process, such as the training analysts appointment process; and
(C) either (i) have graduated from psychoanalytic institutes approved by APsA, IPA, ACPEInc, or
(ii) have graduated from psychoanalytic institutes not approved from APsA, IPA, ACEPInc and can document education and training that are equivalent to the standards of those organizations, which include but are not limited to:
(a) both training analysis and control analyses conducted on an individual basis at a frequency of three to five times per week;(b) A minimum 300 hours of in-depth training analysis, with a frequency of 3-to-5 times per week;(c) A minimum of 350 curriculum hours including course work in psychoanalytic treatment, situation and technique, theory,
Applicants applying under the provisions of subsection 2, 3 or 4 above, must attach a copy of their graduation certificate, didactic schedule, and any other documentation of education and training.

Applicants must complete an application form, submit supplemental information, and pay the fee. The forms can be mailed to the ABPsa office, or uploaded into the online application form below.
The ABPsa will review the application, supporting documents, and verify licensure. If approved, a letter and certificate will be issued within 8 weeks.
The cost to apply for the certification equivalency program fee is $250: $100 (nonrefundable) covers the verification process, plus the first year of certification. Certification is valid for one year and has a recertification fee, currently at $150 but is subject to change.
ABPsa will not be subsidized by any organization. The commitment is to assure its independence therefore its financial well being depends entirely on fees from applications for certification, annual registry renewal fees, donations, and grants.
